In the rapidly changing scene of arts publishing in Australia, Artist Profile has had an overwhelming show of support for its first two issues, both from the art industry and wider public. We’re pleased to announce that we have just been bought by Wolseley Media, an innovative new media venture headed by former ACP Deputy CEO, David Gardiner, who brings formidable strategic and operational experience in the competitive world of magazine publishing.
Artist Profile is all about visual artists. We give the public an introduction into the creative working arena of artists, discussing their practice right from the creative foundation without art world hype. As revered art historian E.M. Gombrich wrote in his classic The Story of Art, “There is really no such things as ‘Art’, there are only artists.”
Art is a medium for communicating ideas, closely bound to the people who make it. There’s a common belief that artists are not the best people to talk about their own work. With each issue, the more we find this is not the case. The key is to ask the right questions. Rather than “what does it mean?” which is a bottomless pit, the insightful answers come when you go into the studio and ask, “how, when and why did you make this?
Judging by the letters, we’ve received, readers are picking us up all over the place. Our distribution deals with QANTAS and Pan Sing have opened up the Asia-Pacific market and introduced the big end of town to what we do. Subscriptions are coming in from bankers, lawyers, architects and so on, all looking for a fresh creative outlet with strong local content.
Artist Profile is packed with information for anyone who looks at art, all kinds of art, and anyone who likes big pictures of messy studios and artists wearing dirty overalls. It is for artists, for buyers and patrons of art, and for anyone interested in creative processes. We’ve got our feet firmly in the Australasian scene with many of our articles written by local artists themselves. We have an enviable network of regular editorial contributors, such as leading critic Sebastian Smee, as well as award-winning feature writers based in London, New York, Johannesburg and Beijing.
Enjoy our Issue 4 and let us know what you at think:
